Water Chemistry and Environmental Tritium Laboratory

Asst. Prof. Dr. Türker KURTTAŞ
About the Laboratory

The Hacettepe University Water Chemistry and Environmental Tritium Laboratory was established in 1987 under the Division of Hydrogeological Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering[cite: 22].

The laboratory routinely conducts physical, chemical, and pollution parameter analyses of natural waters (streams, lakes, wetlands, seawater) as well as drinking, irrigation, industrial, thermal, and mineral waters, along with Tritium analyses in water samples[cite: 22].

Testing adheres strictly to internationally recognized Standard Methods For the Examination of Water and Wastewater established by APHA, AWWA, and WPCF[cite: 22]. The facility is equipped with modern analytical instrumentation, operated by experienced technical staff[cite: 22].

Quality Control & IAEA Interlaboratory Comparison
Analytical accuracy and precision are regularly audited[cite: 22]. Results of the interlaboratory comparison program conducted with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Vienna Laboratories are presented below[cite: 22]:
Analyzing Lab Ca Mg Na K Total Cations
IAEA 2.32 0.78 0.88 0.06 4.04
HU SKL 2.582 0.720 0.709 0.078 4.089
Analyzing Lab CO3 HCO3 Cl SO4 Total Anions
IAEA 0.00 2.74 0.86 0.25 3.85
HU SKL 0.111 2.942 0.790 0.255 4.098
Sampling & Preservation Guidelines
  • Sampling Point: Natural water samples should be collected as close to the source as possible[cite: 22]. Well sampling requires purging at least three well-bore volumes prior to sample collection[cite: 22].
  • Snow & Precipitation: Snow samples must never be heated directly; they should thaw naturally at room temperature away from direct sunlight[cite: 22]. Precipitation sampling must follow IAEA GNIP guidelines (Precipitation Sampling Document)[cite: 22].
  • Containers: Clean, unused 1-liter polyethylene or glass bottles are required[cite: 22]. Rinse the bottle three times with sample water before filling completely to exclude air bubbles[cite: 22].
  • Tritium & Preservation: Samples for Tritium analysis also require 1-liter clean containers[cite: 22]. Label all bottles clearly with sample ID, date, location, and field parameters[cite: 22]. Samples must be kept at +4 °C without additives and delivered to the lab within 24 hours[cite: 22].
