Mineralogy-Petrology Division

The Division of Mineralogy and Petrology conducts education and research activities on the genesis, composition, structure, properties, and classification of minerals and rocks. The division aims to contribute to the understanding of geological processes by examining the physical, chemical, and crystallographic characteristics of minerals and rocks—the fundamental building blocks of the Earth—using modern analytical techniques.

The curriculum includes theoretical and practical courses in mineralogy, optical mineralogy, crystallography, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology. Students thoroughly examine the characteristics of minerals and rocks using polarizing microscopes, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other advanced laboratory techniques, interpreting the acquired data in the context of geological processes.

Laboratory practice is integrated with field geology to enhance students' analytical thinking, observational, and scientific evaluation skills. Research within the division focuses on natural stones, industrial raw materials, ore minerals, and critical minerals; revealing the characterization, formation conditions, and utilization potentials of natural resources through mineralogical and geochemical analyses. Through national and international research projects, current scientific developments are closely followed, supporting research-oriented student education.
