Division of Applied Geology

The Division of Applied Geology conducts education and research activities focused on geological and geotechnical evaluations required for the safe, economical, and sustainable planning, design, construction, and operation of engineering structures. Within the division, the engineering properties of soil and rock environments are investigated, aiming to identify, analyze, and develop appropriate engineering solutions for geological and geotechnical risks that may be encountered in infrastructure and superstructure projects.

In this context, engineering geology studies are carried out for dams, tunnels, highways, railways, bridges, energy structures, mining activities, and urban settlement areas. Educational and research activities encompass core topics such as rock and soil mechanics, geotechnical investigations, engineering geology, mass movements, landslides, rockfalls, earthquake geology, and natural hazard assessments.

Comprehensive solutions to engineering problems are produced by combining field observations, geological mapping, evaluation of borehole data, laboratory testing, and numerical modeling methods. Furthermore, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies, and 3D modeling techniques are integrated into engineering applications within the division; scientific research is carried out toward disaster risk reduction, safe urbanization, and sustainable land use.

Through joint research and practical projects conducted with public institutions, local governments, and the private sector, students are supported in acquiring professional experience. In line with an interdisciplinary approach, strong collaborations are fostered between geological engineering and other engineering disciplines, particularly civil, environmental, and mining engineering.
