About the Laboratory

Description: The Paleontology Laboratory utilizes various specialized methods to identify, age, and determine depositional environments of diverse fossil assemblages within rock matrices.

Objective: Identification, taxonomic classification, and biostratigraphic dating of various fossil groups.

Scope of Services: Services are offered to geological engineers and geologists specializing in paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and regional geology.

Equipment & Facilities
Optical microscopy and sample preparation equipment available in the laboratory:
  • 1 x Zeiss Photomicroscope-III Microscope
  • 2 x Leica S8AP0 Microscopes
  • 2 x Olympos SZ60 Microscopes
  • 1 x Decon F5100b Ultrasonic Cleaner
  • 1 x Vortice Fume Hood
  • Test sieve set with 0.250 mm, 0.500 mm, and 1.000 mm mesh sizes
Analyses Conducted
Preparation of rock samples using acid digestion (Hydrogen Peroxide, Acetic Acid, Hydrofluoric Acid), washing, drying, sieving by grain size, and micro-tube separation are fully carried out. Under binocular stereomicroscopes, faunal assemblages are picked and preliminary taxonomic identifications are completed. Detailed ostracod and radiolarian studies are finalized by mounting selected specimens onto SEM stubs for high-resolution imaging.
