About the Laboratory
In the Hydrogeology Laboratory, experimental testing is carried out on hand specimens of lithological units collected from the field in order to determine their hydrogeological properties, applying standardized methods defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
Analysis / Experimental Infrastructure

Equipment and apparatus available in the laboratory:

  1. Equipment for determining grain size distribution of soil materials.
  2. Beckman Air Pycnometer: Used to measure the volumes of powder, unconsolidated granular, porous, and irregularly shaped samples.
  3. Constant-head permeameter apparatus for determining hydraulic conductivity of unconsolidated samples.
  4. Falling-head permeameter apparatus for determining hydraulic conductivity of unconsolidated samples.
  5. Equipment for pycnometer specific gravity testing on unconsolidated samples.
  6. Ruska Gas Permeameter: Used for hydraulic conductivity testing on consolidated core samples.
  7. Equipment for determining moisture equivalent content in unconsolidated samples.

Standard testing methods applied in the laboratory:

  1. Particle-size distribution determination of soil materials (ASTM D 421-85 (1998), ASTM D 422-63 (1998), ASTM D 2217-85 (1998), and ASTM D 1140-97)
  2. Volume measurement via air pycnometer
  3. Dry unit weight determination (ASTM D 1895)
  4. Hydraulic conductivity testing on unconsolidated samples via constant-head permeameter (ASTM D 2434-68 (1994))
  5. Hydraulic conductivity testing on unconsolidated samples via falling-head permeameter (ASTM D 5084-90 (1997))
  6. Specific gravity determination by pycnometer method (ASTM D854-98)
  7. Porosity determination (ASTM D 425-88 (1997))
  8. Hydraulic conductivity testing on consolidated core samples via Ruska gas permeameter (ASTM D 4525-90 (1995))
  9. Moisture equivalent content determination (ASTM D 425-88 (1994/2000))
